Search tips

You can find information on FISD by using the keyword search box, or by selecting a subject category on the left hand side of the page.

Keyword search

When using the search box, just type in what you want to find (be it a type of activity or service, or an organisation’s name) and click on the ‘Search’ button next to it. A search results page will appear which lists all the matching records.

You can narrow your search results by selecting a location in the ‘Where’ box. This can be a full or partial postcode, or a place name (such as Tottenham or the name of a road. You can also specify a search radius so the results will only show those services nearest to you. This can be set at half a mile, one mile or five miles.

You can narrow your search results further by selecting a category to search within. There are nine categories to choose from.

The results page

Once you’ve entered your search terms and clicked ‘search’ the results page will appear.

The results page lists all the records that match your search terms. The name of the record is listed, along with a brief description, phone number and email address (if available). If you have more than 10 matching results you can use the next link or click on the page numbers to see all the records.

If you want to find out more about any of the organisations listed, click on the title to see more details.

Subject categories

On the left-hand side of the FISD pages you will find a list of the nine main subject categories in the directory. These are the same as those listed in the middle of the FISD home page.

Once you have clicked on one of these subject areas you will see a list of all matching records. You can also use the search box to search within this category (and narrow your search).

Improving your search results

If the results returned don’t include anything helpful, try changing your search terms:

  • If you’ve got lots of results your search terms may have been too vague. Try being more specific or adding more words.
  • If you haven’t got any results your search terms may have been too specific. Try removing one or two words from your search terms.

If you still cannot find what you are looking for you can try one of the following:

  • Choose your search words carefully. For example you may get more matching results searching for ‘nursery’ than for ‘nurseries’ (because ‘nursery’ will be in the organisation title).
  • Reduce the number of search criteria. Widening the search radius or removing the category may help.
  • Keep the search words simple. You don’t need to say ‘childminders in wood green’. Use the Where box to type in the location and search for ‘childminder’ in the keyword search box instead.
