Change a life. Become a My Guide volunteer.

Help a person who is blind or partially sighted get their independence back by supporting them to take up new activities. You can make an amazing difference by offering someone the time to simply get out of the house once a week.

Guide Dogs are looking for volunteers who want to make a difference to people who are blind or partially sighted. They are now recruiting volunteers to spend a few hours a week with service users on agreed activities, helping them become more independent - not dependent. Volunteers will help their partner get out and about, to do the things that others take for granted. This might be regular trips to the shops, a coffee house, social club, the local bingo or even simply for a walk. As the service user grows in confidence, volunteers help their partner establish lasting relationships with community members who can, in turn, help them get out more. The service user will then be able to continue their journey to independence as a result of the volunteer’s support.

Joe’s sight deteriorated in his 40’s and he was no longer going out of the house. He was referred to My Guide and after just four sessions with his new sighted guide Joe’s confidence improved. He has now been introduced to a variety of activities and is out most days of the week. Without his My Guide volunteer who introduced him back to the world he would still be isolated at home today.
