What is budgeting?

Budgeting is the process of creating a plan to spend your money. Creating this spending plan allows you to make sure in advance that you will have enough money to do the things you need to do such as paying your rent or your electricity bills and working out how much money you have left to spend on things you would like to do, such as a trip to the cinema, or treating yourself to a pizza.

Why should I budget?

Budgeting will help you plan how to spend your money wisely, to make sure all of the important bills are paid such as rent, heating and to help you identify where you may waste money.  When you actually see the breakdown of your expenses, you may be surprised by what you find by writing everything down and adding everything up.  Creating a budget will decrease your stress levels because, with a budget, there are no surprises.  Budgeting can help you plan for emergencies such as unexpected car problems or domestic appliances breaking down. It can also help you plan how you can save for a holiday or a special event such as a wedding.  When you plan a budget and stick to it, you don’t have to panic or wonder if you have the money—you already know.
