Angelman Syndrome Support Education Research Trust (ASSERT)

Description:

Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a rare genetic condition causing severe learning difficulties.

AS is a neurological disorder caused by irregularities in Chromosome 15. Most children are diagnosed between the ages 3 to 7 when characteristic physical and behaviour features become evident.

ASSERT is a United Kingdom based support group run by volunteers who have direct contact with people with Angelman Syndrome.

The groups objectives include:

  • providing an information pack for families of those newly diagnosed
  • offering advice and support to parents
  • forging links with similar AS organisations overseas
  • holding regional meetings in different locations throughout the year
  • establishing a register of families to act as a support for families of those newly diagnosed
  • funding research into AS
  • raising public awareness by means of articles for journals and magazines
