The Specific Speech and Language Impaired Children's Service (SSLIC)


A  team of speech and language therapists and specialist language teachers. Work in schools to provide intensive support for Reception and KS1 pupils with severe and specific speech and language disorders. A package of therapy/teaching support is provided depending on the childs level and profile of need. School staff are expected to take part in the sessions in order to provide follow up work during the week. Parents are informed of all activities and have opportunites to join some sessions. Support is based on pupil need. It can include 1-3 visits a week by a therapist or teacher or a combination. Input plans set robust targets. Progress is regularly evaluated and the package of support will reduce in line with  progress. Service is delivered face to face and is a school based service. School staff are expected to take part in the sessions so that follow up work can take place on a regular basis in class to consolidate skills. SSLIC practioners; Contribute to the childs IEP, Offer training to staff to develop  skills and understanding to carry out SSLIC activities. Advise school staff on strategies to support and facilitate the childs learning.
Parental liaison is encouraged, the child will take activities home to practice.

Home/school link books are used for passing on information.

Parents are invited to come and observe teaching sessions. Regular courses are run for schools, by the specialist teachers, focussing on; understanding speech, language and communication needs, and overcoming barriers to learning for pupils with speech, language and communication needs.
