Thrive: Gardening and Horticulture

Description:

Gardening for health charity, Thrive specialises in using therapeutic horticulture to improve people’s lives.

Established 40 years ago, Thrive has three centres in Birmingham, London, and near Reading, where hundreds of client gardeners can take part in their programmes.  They promote the health and wellbeing benefits of gardening to the wider population, for example via their "It’s Not Just Gardening" campaign in April 2019.

Thrive's Horticultural Therapists work with a wide range of client gardeners including people with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, autism, long-term illness and those with poor mental health.  They use plants and gardens in a process known as Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) to help improve people’s physical and mental health, as well as communication and thinking skills.  STH also uses the garden as a safe and secure place to develop clients’ social interaction, as well as life skills that will help them live more independently.

They also run an information service and last year helped approximately 3,000 people from around the country with inquiries related to gardening and STH.  In addition, we are the UK’s leading STH training organisation, running face-to-face as well as online courses across the country.
