British Obesity Society

Description:

The British Obesity Society (BOS) is a charity which aims to improve the lives of people affected by obesity by providing advice and support to help create healthier and happier communities in the UK.

In 2014, 1 in 4 men and women in the UK were classed as obese. Over half of the nations' adult population now has a BMI over 25, where a healthy BMI is within the range of 18.5 to 25, and statistics for children are equally bad.

The BOS are committed to help make a difference to those people whose lives are plagued by obesity.  They believe that their members, both health care professionals and the general public, should work together and learn from each other to make a difference, by sharing best practice, good ideas and innovative ways to engage the larger community to become more active.

Their vision is to inspire and support children and adults of all ages to understand how to be healthy and sustain positive behaviour changes, helping create a healthier nation for future generations.  They try to do this through:

  • the advancement of public knowledge and understanding about healthy weight and lifestyles,
  • providing support for organisations and communities that are actively driving health and wellbeing, and
  • creating an authentic place for people to get support and information about obesity and health.
