Inland Waterways Association (Shrewsbury and North Wales branch)

Description:

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) was founded in 1946 and campaigns for the conservation, use, maintenance, restoration and development of all inland waterways for public benefit.

The IWA is organised through a network of 33 local branches, which hold a range of events in their areas, including fund-raising activities, walks and waterway clean-ups, as well as regular meetings with talks, slide shows and open evenings. Most produce a local newsletter or magazine.

The Shrewsbury and North Wales Branch area includes the popular Shropshire Union and Llangollen canals, and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the world’s first cast iron bridge at Ironbridge Gorge, near Telford, and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct across the River Dee near Trevor. The exciting canal restorations on the Shrewsbury and Newport and Montgomery canals also lie within the branch’s Shropshire area and the branch actively supports these.
