APS Support UK
Description:
APS Support UK is a UK charity dedicated to supporting anyone affected by antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). They aim to achieve earlier diagnosis and better treatment by raising awareness of the condition and helping fund research.
APS is a blood clotting disorder which can potentially cause strokes, DVTs, heart attacks and blood clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism). In pregnancy, APS is the most significant treatable cause of recurrent miscarriage, and is also associated with high rates of stillbirth, pre–eclampsia, low weight babies and premature births.
APS is a significantly under-diagnosed and under-recognised condition. From listening to the APS community, they have found that:
- diagnosis can be a lengthy process, three years being the average time until a patient finally receives a diagnosis;
- there is a lack of medical awareness of the condition; and
- patients are often isolated and confused.
APS Support UK is working hard to raise awareness and medical education of this little-known disease, as well as providing support for patients and funds for research.
The APS Support UK website aims to provide answers to many of the questions people ask the charity when they are either seeking a diagnosis or have just been diagnosed.
