Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings
Description:
The Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings (Friends) was formed in August 2010 in response to the public consultation and growing interest and enthusiasm for the development of the heritage buildings amongst the community. Their original aim was to stimulate involvement in the Flaxmill Maltings site and its renovation.
The Flaxmill Maltings is a unique and internationally important site, containing seven listed buildings including the first cast-iron framed building in the world, along with the third and eighth, which are grade 1. Located in the heart of one of Shropshire’s most deprived communities the buildings fell out of use in 1987, and have since become derelict. This important industrial heritage, which is owned by Historic England, has been designated ‘at risk’ and the Main Mill and Kiln are currently being renovated using grants from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Shropshire Council and Historic England.
The Friends have been highly successful in raising a huge amount of interest for the project, through public access and extensive media coverage which has increased its profile, generating enthusiasm and commitment to secure its future.
Their vision is that The Flaxmill Maltings is brought back to life at the heart of the community, and their Mission is that they provide opportunities for all to engage with and be inspired by the Flaxmill Maltings.
Their aim is to enable current and future generations to appreciate and celebrate their heritage, and they aim to achieve this by providing projects and activities, which encourage learning, recreation, community engagement and employment.
