Image of The Olympian Trail

The Olympian Trail

Description:

Much Wenlock in Shropshire is the home of the modern Olympic Games, no honestly!

Dr William Penny Brookes was a local doctor who campaigned tirelessly to revive the ancient Greek games. It is somewhat fitting that the town has its own Olympic trail that takes you past some of the sites within the town associated with the good doctor and the Wenlock Olympian society.

The trail is approximately just a little over a mile in distance and begins and ends at the Much Wenlock Museum, just off the town square. The Museum houses a large collection of Wenlock Olympian society artefacts which are on display and act to illustrate the significant role of the town and Dr Brookes in revival of the games.

Both the ‘The Olympian Trail’ and ‘A Children’s Olympian Trail Challenge’ leaflets are available from Much Wenlock Museum, The Guildhall and Wenlock Tourist Information Centre. You can also view a large version of the map on the wall outside Much Wenlock Museum.
