Oswestry and District Civic Society

Description:

Oswestry and District Civic Society aims to encourage a sensitive balance between the demands of new developments and the need to conserve the best features of Oswestry's urban and rural settlements. The society was refounded in the early 1980s.

Through its programme of open meetings, the society seeks to promote awareness of, and pride in, the best features of both town and countryside.

The society has an active membership, supports a programme of talks and visits throughout the year and conducts an annual Buildings Awards programme.

It has also commissioned publications designed to encourage an Oswestrian sense of identity and pride. So far, the following have been published:

• Penson dynasty: building on the Welsh border 1822-1859 (2002)
• Sir Henry Walford Davies (1869-1941): Master of the King's musick (2003)
• Oswestry girl: Barbara Pym 1913-1980 (2005, reprinted 2010)
• Edward Lhuyd, 1660-1709: A Shropshire Welshman (2009, reprinted 2012)
