West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust provides the 999 emergency ambulance service in Shropshire.

The Trust serves a population of 5.6 million people covering an area of more than 5,000 square miles made up of Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Coventry, Birmingham and Black Country conurbation. They are the second most ethnically diverse region in the country. They employ over 7,000 people and are supported by about 1,000 volunteers.

Education is important to them; they are training hundreds of staff to higher levels of qualification at university. They have more paramedics than any other service and now have a paramedic on every vehicle, the only service in the country to achieve this.

Their two emergency operations centres now regularly take over 5,000 '999' calls a day, making them the third busiest ambulance service in the country. As well as dispatching ambulances to the public, their highly trained staff are increasingly providing advice over the phone.

They also work with communities across the region to provide information on safety issues and emergency situations.
