Happy children, growing and learning together, is what Broomhall Nursery has excelled in since we opened in 1930. The oldest nursery in Sheffield, we are a standalone nursery school funded by the Local Authority. Staffed exclusively by teachers educated to degree standard and level 3 qualified early years practitioners, the children here enjoy an exceptional learning through play experience.

Ofsted has rated us as “outstanding” in all areas of our provision (2014/2015).

Recognised as an inclusive setting. "Early assessments and staff support enable children with disabilities to make the same excellent progress as other children." Ofsted 2014. Staff have undertaken a wide range of special needs training including Makaton, PECS and Intensive Interaction. The Headteacher, SENCO and keyworker plan and oversee the education programme of individual learners and differentiation is used continually. Small group work and one to one support are used as appropriate e.g. social skills groups, intensive interaction sessions, sensory room, etc.

Description

Broomhall Nursery School is a mainstream service providing 'Outstanding' (Ofsted 2014) education for children aged 3-5 years.

The building is fully accessible to all learners largely with ground floor access.  There are ramps, a wheelchair lift, disabled toilet and changing facilities and a sensory room.

The Headteacher, SENCO and keyworkers are responsible for overseeing and planning individual education programmes. Differentiation is used continually and staff are trained in the use of Makaton, PECS and intensive interaction.  Individual education and health plans are shared with teachers who have the support of teaching assistants who work with the children directly to meet their specific needs.

Each classroom has a qualified teacher supported by Level 3 TAs in a ratio of 1:13.  In addition Level 2 TAs are employed to support the specific needs of learners with SEND on a 1:1 or small group basis as appropriate.

Staff are trained in the use of visual timetables which all children use, Makaton, PECS and intensive intervention.

Parents are involved in SEN reviews on a half termly basis and parental consultations. Daily contact is provided through children's keyworkers.  Parents also receive termly newsletters about general nursery news.  For parents with English as an additional language we use staff who have additional languages as interpreters.
