National Literacy Trust

About

We are an independent charity working with schools and communities to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills to succeed in life.

We work to improve the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the UK's poorest communities, where one in three people have literacy problems.

Because low literacy is intergenerational, we focus our work on families, young people and children.

Early Years programmes

We train early years staff and volunteers to work with families, building parents’ confidence so they can support their children’s communication, language and literacy skills at home. Our programmes include:

  • Early words together - helps parents support their young child's literacy and language development.
  • Early words together at two - an adaptation of our early words together programme, designed specifically for families of two year olds.
  • HELLO framework - audit language and communication provision in the early years.
  • CPD and training - our CPD offer develops practitioners' skills and knowledge in the areas of communication, language and literacy and social and emotional development.
  • Everyone Ready for School - engages parents in their young child's learning through a series of fun, creative events held at the school the child will attend in September.
  • Small Talk - a project which helps parents turn the activities they are already doing with thier child every day into new opportunities to build their child's language skills.
Primary programmes

Our primary programmes help children to read for pleasure, use sport to inspire pupils and support primary school libraries. Our programmes include:

  • Love our Libraries - provides online training, resources and research for those working in school libraries.
  • NewsWise - we help teachers empower pupils to access, understand, analyse and participate in the news.
  • Premier League Primary Stars - use the appeal of the Premier League and professional soccer clubs to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills.
  • Shooting Stars - inspiring young girls to get active and learn about soccer through the magic of storytelling.
  • Young City Poets - give pupils the opportunity to visit famous cultural venues in their city, using the visits to inspire poetry.
  • Young Readers Programme - runs fun events where children can choose books to take home and keep.
