CHICKS is a national children's charity providing free respite breaks to children aged 8 to 15 from all over the UK who would really benefit from a break from their home lives.
Each week from February to December, sixteen children come to stay at one of our three retreats (Moorland in Devon, Coastal in Cornwall and Daleside in Derbyshire). Each break is divided into school key stage ages: KS2, aged 8 to 11, KS3, aged 11 to 13 and KS4, aged 14 to 15. The children are accompanied by three fully-trained members of the CHICKS team, and up to six adult volunteers.
The breaks are fun and exciting whilst also providing opportunity for rest and relaxation. The children have the chance to take part in new activities and enjoy new experiences, and we always make the most of the beautiful countryside that surrounds our retreats.
Anyone that works with a child in a professional capacity can refer them for a five day residential respite break.
The professional must know the child to make the referral. Before a child is booked on a break a CHICKS coordinator will conduct a telephone assessment with this professional to cover the reasons why the child has been referred as well as any behavioural or medical needs the child has. It is important this person is able to answer these questions with as much detail as possible to allow CHICKS to make a decision as to whether it is the right support for each child.
