Children and Young People’s Voice

According to the United Nations right of the Child it is the right of every young person to have their opinions and ideas heard by the adults who make decisions which affect their lives.

Increasingly government and other organisations are recognising the need for services to hear and acknowledge 'children's and young people's voice'

What we do

In Rochdale we are keen for young people to have their say and through the Youth Service opportunities are created for young people to do so.

Every year we run the elections for the Member of UK Youth Parliament (MYP) and their deputy who meet with the local Youth Cabinet in Rochdale as well as attending regional and national meetings for young people in other towns and cities.

There is also a Children's Council for children aged 8 to 11 that meet monthly. This group is led by the Children's Champion who is also aged 8 to 11 and is elected annually.

Thousands of children and young people take part in the elections for Children's Champion and the Member of Youth Parliament annually.

The team also support forums for targeted groups including Cared for Children, Young Carer's and Young People with Additional Needs. All of these groups have representatives or feed their views and opinions into the borough-wide Youth Cabinet.

The overall aim is to make an impact on the lives of children and young people in the borough through dialogue with decision makers across the 4 townships as well as in Greater Manchester, the North West and Nationally.

C4C Voice

Every Tuesday a group or young people who are in the care of the local authority meet at Matthew Moss Youth Centre to relax and have fun, but they also meets to look at issues affecting young people in care to inform services that are provided for them.

This information is fed back to adult decision makers about their experiences and how their lives could be improved.
