School SEND Information Report
- How does the school/college identify children with special educational needs?
Mo Mowlam Academy provides specialist education for children and young people, from the age of 5 to 16, who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Many of our children and young people have complex needs. All pupils who attend Mo Mowlam Academy have an Educational, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The EHCP helps to determine the level of educational, social and health support your child needs.
On entry to Mo Mowlam Academy, every child is assessed, this is called a baseline assessment and the information is recorded. We continue to keep an eye on how your child is progressing with regular assessments. We report regularly to parents/ carers regarding student progress. Children or young people (who are able to) participate in identifying areas for development in their learning.
- How do we involve parents in planning for those needs?
Staff aim to contact each parent either by telephone or home visit regularly. Formal review meetings are planned at least twice a year for parents and staff to discuss progress. Parents/Carers are asked to complete the 'Parent View' forms as part of the annual EHCP review. Parental questions also form part of the school self evalutation process.
- If the school/college is specialist, which types of special educational need do you cater for?
Mo Mowlam Academy provides education for children with social, emotional and mental health needs.
- Who in the school/college will support my child and how will this be monitored and evaluated?
Support
The first point of contact is the form tutor. Teachers have overall responsibility for the welfare of the children or young people in their class. They are supported in this role by the class teaching assistants and the school's parent support advisor. There is also a Thrive support team in school who work wih children and their families. The SENDCo is part of the school's leadership team and co-ordinates support from specialist services including: Educational Psychologist; Counsellors; Occupational Therapist; CAMHS and any other health professionals.
- How are the decisions made about the type and amount of provision a young person will need?
A young person's EHCP outlines the level of support a child needs. This plan is reviewed by school regularly in liaison with R&C SEN and provision maps are in place.
- How will the curriculum be matched to the needs of the young person?
The curriculum is broad, balanced and designed to help young people be Safe, Healthy, Attend, make Progress and be Employable. Children study the full range of national curriculum courses which are differentiated appropriately according to individual need. All pupils have individual targets.
- How accessible is the school/college environment?
Accessibility
Mo Mowlam Academy ensures access to the building via an accessible entrance suitable for wheelchair users. Disabled toilets are located in school. ICT is used to help our pupils access the curriculum; there are interactive white boards in every classroom.
- How will both the school/college and the parent know how the young person is doing and how will the school support the young person's learning?
Annual reviews of EHCPs take place to review the progress of the student in all areas. We aim to hold six weekly multi agency meetings for those students who require additional monitoring.
Each subject teacher submits assessment data on a half-termly basis. Where an intervention is in place, the person delivering the intervention will assess progress in an agreed timescale (usually 6 weeks). EHCP outcomes are reviewed at annual reviews.
Parents are invited to an annual meeting, to review their child’s EHCP. Regular contact is made between home and school through telephone calls. Parents are invited into school for events.
Parents can be elected as governors. Parent/carer and pupil surveys are regularly sent out by the school.
- What support will there be for the young person's well-being?

- How will the school/college prepare and support the young person to join that particular school/college and how will it support the transition to the next stage of education and life?
Transition
Transition arrangements are personalised to individual need. Following a consultation from the Local Authority, a member of staff from the school will make contact with parents/carers to discuss plans to help the child settle into school. Transition arrangements will be made with the child's best interests in mind.Students join Mo Mowlam Academy at various stages of their education and at various times throughout the academic year. The transition is carefully planned, with a lead member of staff identified to meet the student prior to transition and plan visits for the student to the school. The staff member overseeing transition briefs other staff on the young person prior to them starting. As students move between the different phases within the school (for example, primary to secondary) a personalised transition plan is created. There is a robust careers programme which supports students to ensure they secure a place in Education, Employment or Training when they leave Mo Mowlam Academy. A range of vocational placements are available for older students to prepare them for the post 16 phase.
