Windrush Events in Reading 2019 - June to October 2019

First national Windrush Day on 22 June 2019

Four exciting events are to be held in Reading to celebrate the contribution of the Windrush Generation to the town’s economic, social and cultural life.

A consortium of local community groups and Reading Borough Council have been awarded a £10,000 grant from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to organise the activities. The consortium includes Reading Museum, the Alliance for Cohesion and Racial Equality (ACRE), Barbados and Friends Association (BAFA), Reading Caribbean Associations Group (CAG), and Age UK Berkshire.

Windrush Sports Day, 22 June 2019

A family-friendly sports day with an inter-generational theme, involving cricket and demonstrations of a variety of sports and games enjoyed by the original Windrush generation.

  • Music from the 50s, 60s and 70s
  • Face painting, bouncy castle, dominoes, food and drink stalls
  • 12 noon to 8pm, South Reading Leisure Centre, RG2 8DF

Windrush Community Art Exhibition, 20 July 2019

A community-made art exhibition, commemorating the Windrush Generation’s legacy, drawing inspiration from Reading’s landmark Black History Mural.

Windrush Contemporary Collection, 14 September 2019

A programme of contemporary museum and archive collecting with the aim of increasing representation of the Caribbean community in Reading Museum’s ‘Story of Reading’ gallery.

Windrush Community Theatre Production, 26 October 2019

A dramatisation of conversations and first-hand accounts from individuals from Reading’s Windrush Generation and their descendants, followed by post-show discussions and workshops.
