Royal Berkshire Hospital Learning Disability Co-ordinator

Service is delivered to all adult patients (over 16) with a learning disability

The Learning Disability Liaison Nurse is a central contact at the hospital for families, service users, carers, community health and social welfare professionals and housing providers.

The LD liaison nurse:

  • Facilitates reasonable adjustments for people with a learning disability who are using either in-patient or out-patient services at the hospital.
  • Provides advice and support to staff within the hospital about how best to meet the needs of patients with a learning disability while they are using the services here.

The Trust has a bleep system for patients and carers attending out-patient clinics at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Clinic staff will try to fast track learning disability patients through but this isn’t always possible. General out- patients have their own bleeps – carers need to ask at reception in those clinics. For any of the other clinics, a bleep can be collected from the PALS office on level 2, behind Main Reception. More information on the Trust website.

Is your service accessible?
Monday – Friday 9am-5pm Full disabled access available, allow for adaptations to meet needs of learning disabilities etc. ‘All about me’ books are provided to patients who have learning disabilities to support their individual needs. These are filled in by the patient and carers.

Patients can be referred if they have a learning disability.

Referrals are made by self referral, families / carers, ward staff and other services outside of the Trust

How will I know my child will be safe using this service?

Safeguarding the welfare and wellbeing of all children and young people who use our services, including those with special educational needs and disability is essential to providing health care; this includes protecting their health, human rights and ensuring they are free from harm, abuse or neglect. ‘The action we take to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm is 'everyone’s responsibility’ • The Trust meets statutory requirements in relation to Criminal Records Bureau checks • Child Protection Polices and systems are up to date and robust including processes for flagging up children who miss outpatient appointments and a system for flagging children for whom there are child protection/safeguarding concerns. • There is a Board level Executive Director lead for safeguarding • Named professionals are clear about their roles and have sufficient time and support to undertake them. • There is a rolling programme of training within the Trust to ensure that all eligible staff are appropriately trained
