Description

Rainbow Day Nursery opened in 1999. We operate from a purpose built building that is located opposite to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. We provide day care for children of parents who are employees of the Royal Berkshire NHS Turst Hospital.  The nursery comprises of three children's rooms.  The Baby Room is located on the first floor and has it's own milk kitchen, sleep room and changing area.  It also has access to it's own garden.  This room caters for children less than two years of age.  On the lower floor there is a Toddler Room that caters for children between 2-3 years and a pre-school, 3-5 years.  Both have their own toilet area and access to the main garden, allowing free flow from indoors to outdoors.  There is ample storage in each room and children have access to equipment.  Both gardens are laid out with artificial grass to allow the children access throughout the whole year.  Both children have their own sheds where outdoor equipment is stored.  There are both stairs and a lift to allow everyone access to the ground floor.

The nursery is open Monday to Friday, 51 weeks of the year, closing for Bank Holidays and the days between Christmas and New Year.  Core opening hours are 7.00 until 18.00. At present a maximum of 59 children can attend the nursery .  The nursery employs 15 staff.  A supernumerary manager and deputy with 15 staff who are directly involved with the children.  There is also a house keeper  and office administrator. No cook is employed as all meals are prepared by the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Children are offered places in strict order, but priority is given to siblings. This means that our children have a wide range of cultural differences, but also that we have a wealth of parental knowledge that we can draw upon.  Working with the hospital's different departments and outer outside agencies we are able effectively integrate those children with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. There are some children in the nursery with English as their second language.  Our staff also reflect the cultural diversity of Reading area.

Updated September 2023

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

Rainbow Day Nursery staff, identify children with additional needs or send by the key person observing the child over a period of time.  A meeting will be arranged with the parents/carers of the child to discuss concern strategies with key person and Senco co-coordinators. At present a maximum of 59 children attend the nursery at any one time. We support children with learning difficulties and also children who speak English as an additional language.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

An individual Education Plan will then be put in to place which set targets and a time scale to support the child's learning.

Background information about individual children with special educational needs is collected and recorded and updated. We would liaise with other professionals in respect of children with educational needs if require.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

Rainbow Day Nursery adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage accordant to each child's individual needs. Children's interest forms are completed in order to inform future planning. Key group planning includes evaluation of activities, this to is used when doing future planning. Children have access to resources which lead to children initiating their own child led activities.   The different learning styles of children are met by building strong relationships with the children and observing them in their play. Activities can be adapted to meet their different learning styles.

We plan for individual children, taking into account their culture and background, including those children with learning difficulties and/or disabilities and those with English as a second language. This ensures that we offering an inclusive service and that each individual child receives an enjoyable and stimulating time across all areas of learning. Individual children's needs are met through continual observations and completing children's progress reports so that areas for development are identified and then be planned in to the curriculum

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

Individual educational plans, visual time tables and picture cards and additional props if required.  Other professional which be called into the setting to give teaching strategies to staff and Senco co-ordinators attend regular training and cluster meeting to keep us updated.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

Rainbow Day Nursery will monitor individual children progress using daily observations, meeting with parents, key carer and the nursery senco co-ordinator putting in place an individual educational plan and it will be reviewed and updated every six weeks to make sure targets are achieved.  Staff will liaise with other professionals in respect of children with SEND needs. The professional involved would be Local Children's Center.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

Rainbow Day Nursery will monitor the children progress using observations, using Early Years outcomes, completing progress report on a 4 monthly basis, 2 year progress checks. Using an IEP we will set targets and monitor the progress every six weeks and we will review the progress with parents, key carer, senco co-ordinator and then set new SMART targets for the next six week if needed.   We would use a diary system to communicate a child progress with another setting if a child is attending another setting.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

Rainbow Day Nursery will adapt the activities using additional props and support from a member of staff or the child key carer where needed to help the child take part in the activity. Extra members of staff will be appointed to meet ratios when attending trips and outings. A risk assessment will be carried out before attending an outing in which we check safety and  suitable for the age group we are taking.  We also fill in a form reviewing the outing which look at transport, venue and any specific problem and benefit of the visit and we also ask for parents comments.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

Rainbow Day Nursery Building is accessible to wheel chairs, as the building is on two levels. The baby room is on the top floor of the building and the Toddlers Room and Pre-school are downs stairs. There is a left to access the down stairs. The Front Door to the Rainbow day nursery is able to fit a  child wheel chair through it, if needed.

The nursery in the past have been provided with equipment to support children who have physical need i.e. a chair to support the child's back.  In each room a visual time table is displayed to help children have a visual understanding of the daily routine in each room.  We also provide picture cards to i.e. for individual children i.e. picture of a cup in which they point to if they need a drink or a potty in which they understand it is potty time.

If a child is transferring to a new the setting, teacher or other professional will be invited in to meet the key carer, the Individual child and explore the setting and find out about the child progress, looking through the child's learning journal, likes and dislikes and any other question which they may have.  A Transfer Form will be completed by the child key carer then sent to the child's school or new setting.
