The Pilgrim School

The Pilgrim School provides educational support for children and young people with medical and/or mental health difficulties and who are too unwell to attend their own school. The provision is for children and young people of compulsory school age (i.e. 4 - 16 years) who live in Lincolnshire.

Admission to The Pilgrim School is through a referral system. The child's own school must make a request for our involvement which MUST be accompanied by written medical evidence from an appropriately qualified medical practitioner.

If a child is not registered with another school, the referral may come from the Local Authority’s Education out of School team, the Specialist Teaching and Applied Psychology Service and, for longer stay in-patients, the hospital wards at either Pilgrim Hospital or Lincoln County Hospital

The Pilgrim School is not a long term alternative provision. The intention is for pupils to be supported during the time they are unable to attend their own school and to be helped to return or to make a successful transition to another placement, including college or 6th form, at the end of compulsory education. Pupils are, therefore, dual registered and both schools work in partnership to provide an appropriate support package designed to meet an individual's special circumstances.

The school aspires to enable pupils to continue working towards achieving their potential, in the context of their particular condition, at a time when they are vulnerable and requiring additional help to access education .

For all our pupils, we place high value on the development of close co-operation between school, families, medical and nursing personnel, mental health service teams and other involved professional agencies. This extends to any child brought to our attention by colleagues from other disciplines, whose best interests would be served by our advice and support.

The staff of the school have knowledge, skills and expertise in working with children who experience moderate to severe anxieties, emotional and mental health problems, which are sometimes associated with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum, as well as other physical conditions which are, hopefully, temporary (e.g. recovery from major surgery; cancer; Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME).

The school achieved the Enhanced AIM4 in 2013-14 and holds National Healthy School Status.
