Supported Internships programme
Supported Internships are focused on young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) aged between 16 and 25 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The programme runs in partnership between West London College and a host employer.
The programme consists of 4 days of work placement and one day of learning, both taking place exclusively at the host employer.
Available roles may differ from one year to another. In the past, young people on the programme had the opportunity to work in:
- Human Resources department
- Information Technology department
- Catering, and
- Post Room.
So far, we have partnered with local organisations and companies such as:
- Mayor’s Parlour
- L'Oréal Academy
- Queensmill School, and
- Cambridge School.
A Supported Internship usually lasts for a year and consists of three different roles with the same host employer that last 3 months each. Wherever possible, the young person is supported to move into paid employment after completing the programme. The programme is personalised and could include English and mathematics if appropriate.
The two main components of the programme are work placement and learning.
- Work placement: Working days are usually 4 days per week. The choice of employer will reflect the individual’s passions and interests.
- Learning: There is one day of learning per week (with the host employer). The individual will spend some time focusing on developing employability skills and competencies that are specific to their work placement. They can also continue with their studies in mathematics and English.
Action on Disability will provide trained job coaches to support the young people and their work-based mentors. The number of job coaches available may vary every year depending on the cohort size.
The educational element of the Supported internship will be provided by West London College, who will provide a tutor to act as the first point of contact for parents/carers whose child is enrolled on the programme. Learning days will take place with the host employer.
Learners will also be provided with individualised travel training support according to their needs.
At the end of the programme, we can support the individual to find employment. A job coach may be available for those who wish to take this route.
