Shingles Support Society
The Shingles Support Society (SSS) supplies information and advice on both medical treatment and self-help methods to deal with post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) which can follow a bout of shingles particularly in older patients. Shingles is caused by the herpes varicella-zoster (chickenpox) virus - in fact it is a recurrence of chickenpox.
PHN can be excruciating and debilitating. If PHN develops, the sooner treatment starts, the greater the likelihood of helping it. There is now a vaccine to prevent people from getting shingles: Zostavax. Talk to your GP if you are 70, 78 or 79. (This age range will be increased as supplies become available.)
The SSS was formed and recognised officially as a sub-group of the Herpes Viruses Association (HVA) in 1996. It has now achieved the Information Standard ensuring all the information has been fully referenced and independently verified.

The HVA has been a registered charity since 1985. Conventional painkillers will have no effect on the neurogenic pain of PHN so specialised treatment is required which many GPs are unaware of. Please send SAE and a donation (minimum £1) for about 19 pages of information, four of which are written for your GP by a consultant neurologist who specialises in pain relief.
