Catherine Howe: Francis Bacon; The Anxiety of Influence

Thursday 30 march 2017, 6pm-6.45pm

Description:

Francis Bacon’s ‘pope’ paintings, inspired by Diego Velázquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X, are some of his most well-known, seen to capture the sense of malaise in post-war Europe.Yet, strangely, Bacon saw them as an obsessive failed experiment. This lecture will address the complexities surrounding their interpretation and Bacon’s influences, touching upon existentialism, surrealism and psychoanalysis, along with the precedents that such works set for the rest of his career.
