How do SEN or Disabled Pupils gain access to public examinations?
What is an exam access arrangement?
This is a special adjustment that a pupil with special educational needs or a disability requires in order to be able to take an examination. For example, a pupil with a visual impairment may require examination papers in Braille or with a larger type face. Others may require extra time to complete an English examination because of an impairment related to speed of writing or reading.
An access arrangement must reflect the pupil’s normal way of working in their learning setting.

Does having an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) qualify a child for exam access arrangements?
No. The rules are set by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JQC). Access arrangements must be requested by education settings on behalf of each of their candidates. An EHCP can be used as supporting evidence for certain parts of the application.
