Can I get help paying for care at home?

Paying for care in your own home

If you or your family feel that you need extra support to stay independent at home, you may be eligible for support from social care.

You may be eligible for Disability Living Allowance (under 65yrs) or Attendance Allowance (over 65 yrs). Follow the links below to find out more.

You may prefer to organise and pay for care yourself. The cost of this is variable depending on the type of support you need, (e.g. shopping, personal care or housework) and the care agency you use. Search for ‘home care’ to find an agency serving your local area.

If you are assessed as being eligible for support from social care to enable you to live at home, you may be offered a personal budget; instead of the council buying services on your behalf, you can decide how to use your personal budget - providing it meets the needs identified in your assessment, is legal, keeps you safe and offers value for money.

Many people do not have to pay towards the cost of their social care support or service, but some may be asked to contribute.
