We offer individualised education for all children including those with SEND. We have a very experienced SENCO with over 15 years experience.

Our team have a range of specialist training and experience including in Autism, Team Teach, Dyslexia, Fine and Gross Motor Skills. We also have experience of working with children who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health issues. Our school has disabled access in all necessary areas. We have a strong culture of treating every child as an individual and this is reflected in our Christian values.

How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Most SEND issues are identified by our experienced teachers who will seek advice from the SENCO. The SENCO will then discuss any concerns with parents/carers of the child.

If you think your child has a SEND please contact Mrs Cross (SENCO) to discuss their individual needs in more detail.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Our team will support your child through provision of an individualised support plan (known as the School Support Plan). This details the interventions your child will receive in addition to quality first teaching.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

All our lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of every child in the class and therefore your child will receive the correct level of input. We have a number of children who also have a whole curriculum individualised to meet their needs.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Every parent is invited to attend a parents' evening appointment three times a year (once a term) however, if your child does have SEND you will also be invited to attend regular review meetings with your child's teacher and SENCO.

We will provide advice and support for you to help your child at home. It is essential that parents/carers and school work together and have shared objectives and targets. As such our School Support Plans also include objectives and targets to be worked on at home.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

As a Church of England school, we take the wellbeing of all our children very seriously and support is offered through various Pupil Voice Groups such as buddies, councillors, social action team, charities team etc.

As well as our own expertise and training, we will access other professional services when necessary such as:

  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • EWEL (Emotional wellbeing)
  • Behaviour support
  • ASD team advice
  • Educational Psychology
  • Occupational Therapy etc

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

Our whole team are trained to NVQ level 2 in Autism and all staff have received Team Teach training. Members of our team trained to deliver specific interventions such as Lego Therapy, Nessy and Lexia. We also have staff trained to work with smaller groups on Getting Along etc.

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

We have a totally inclusive approach and therefore your child will not be treated any differently to any other child. Their needs will be assessed, a risk assessment will be carried out and a plan put in place to ensure your child can access all activities including school trips, educational visits and residential trips.

Any concerns will be discussed with you prior to any event.

We have disabled access to all areas of the school which a child would need to access.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We work very closely with the transition manager from our local comprehensive school. Our children begin their transition in Year 5 with visits to the comprehensive to take part in lessons. There are regular meetings with the children including open evenings.

Some children with SEND require a more formal transition plan and this will be discussed and agreed with parents/carers.

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Each child's individual needs are assessed, and resources allocated accordingly. If necessary additional funding applications can be made to the SEND team at County Hall for Early Years funding, top-up funding or EHCP (Educational, Health and Care Plan) funding.

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

This will be made by the Class Teacher, SENCO and parents/carers at a joint meeting.

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents can be as involved as they wish. A parent whose child has SEND will be invited to attend a minimum of six meetings throughout the year. In addition, we often ask for parent volunteers to help in school or you could join The Friends of Stanhope Barrington.
