SEND at Roseberry Primary and Nursery School

How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We are an inclusive school who works in partnership with parents to identify and support the individual needs of all pupils.

Pupils are put on the special educational needs register after discussion with parents/guardians if they are not making expected progress despite receiving additional support. Pupils may be on the register for different periods of time, and if a pupil has made good progress it may be deemed appropriate to remove them from the register. Parents and pupils are put at the heart of this process.

If your child has special educational needs or a disability, please contact the school office or Miss Dodds, the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator, for further guidance.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Lessons at Roseberry Primary and Nursery School are planned carefully to meet the pupils needs through a cycle of assess, plan, do and review.

Pupils may also be invited to join different intervention programmes to boost their progress in areas which they are finding more challenging.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

Lessons are carefully differentiated to meet pupil needs and staff encourage all pupils to access a range of practical resources to support their learning.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

The progress made by pupils is monitored via teacher assessment, half termly tests and end of year summative assessments.

Parents are kept up to date with their child's learning by half termly topic sheets, messages on classdojo (app), parent's evenings, the website and school reports.

We operate an open door policy and encourage parents/guardians to pop into school to meet with staff when they have any queries.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

We support the emotional wellbeing of all of its pupils through PSHE lessons, circle times and events such as our termly anti-bullying days.

Pupils are encouraged to visit our Parent Support Advisor, Mrs Donnelly who runs drop in sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday for pupils who need some time to talk.

All members of staff have been trained by the educational psychology team on restorative approaches, and regularly lead restorative conversations between pupils.

What specialist services and expertise is available at or accessed by the staff?

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

Staff work closely with a range of external agencies including the Educational Psychology Service, CAMHS, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and the Behaviour Intervention Team, etc.

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

Our staff are trained to deliver a range of interventions including:

  • talk boost
  • language link
  • write from the start
  • squiggle whilst you wiggle
  • rainbow arc
  • read write inc
  • numbers count
  • first class @ number
  • success @ arithmetic
  • inference training
  • lexia
  • restorative conversations
  • precision teach
  • lego therapy
  • nurture group
  • zones of regulation

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Pupils attend school trips linked to their topics/'studies' on a termly basis.

Pupils can access extracurricular clubs such as cross country, futsal, dance, art and craft, ICT, Lexia, basketball, netball etc.

Please contact the school office for further information about before/after school clubs.

How will you support my child's needs?

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

We strive to create a fully accessible environment. Please see the school accessibility plan on our website for further details.

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Miss Dodds, our SENCO tracks the progress of all pupils with special educational needs and disabilities. From her analysis she plans intervention groups to meet the pupil's needs.

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

The amount of support provided for pupils is based on their level of need. If a child requires a much higher level of support, then it may be agreed with parents that a top up funding request or statutory assessment be made to secure additional funding.

Please see the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Policy on our school website for further information.

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

We welcome parent helpers to hear pupils read. We also welcome support for our school fairs and other events throughout the year. Please contact the school office if you would like to offer some of your time.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We offer transition days at the end of every school group, which include class swaps and visits to secondary schools for the Year 6 pupils.

Parents are invited into school for 'Meet the Teacher' sessions.
