Selby Cottage Childcare Centre
We offer 30 hours childcare for working parents.
We are a day nursery, out of school club and holiday scheme located in Chester-le-Street. Services are offered for children and young people from ages 0-11 years.
All children have different needs and we endeavour to make sure every child's individual needs are met. Where necessary, we will undertake training and seek advice from other professionals in order to provide quality care. We have a designated SENCO who attends council meetings and training.
We offer activities and play opportunities that promote their wellbeing and development and offer appropriate challenge.
Some additional funding may be claimed from the council to support children with Special Educational Needs.

Selby Cottage recognises that all children have different needs and will endeavour to make sure that every individual child's needs are met.

Children will be provided with relevant activities and play opportunities that promote their wellbeing and development and offer age appropriate challenge.
Some additional funding may be claimed from the Local Authority to support children with Special Educational Needs.
Current practitioner experience to date includes supporting children's emotional wellbeing and additional needs and supporting children with Down Syndrome, Autism and Cerebral Palsy.
Practitioner training and qualifications include Cache SENCO Level 3, Autism Awareness, Makaton training and supporting children with Down Syndrome.
Selby Cottage is wheelchair friendly and practitioners are familiar with various chairs and standing equipment provided by physiotherapists/occupational therapists. The centre has adjustable changing facilities to support all children's needs.

At Selby Cottage practitioners work closely interacting, observing and assessing children to identify any children with additional needs and disabilities.
We work closely with parents and other professionals to put early intervention strategies' in place to ensure that children are making progress.

Practitioners and the SENCO develop and adapt curriculum planning to meet the individual needs of all children.
Support plans are produced for individual children with clear targets linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The SENCO works with the Inclusion Team in the council and other professionals (Health Visitor, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Portage Workers) who all attend sessions at the centre.
Practitioners use Makaton sign language to support communication for children.

The SENCO at the setting is qualified to Level 3 CACHE SENCO. Staff have had training on Autism Awareness, Sign Language and Down Syndrome.
Training is given to staff from the Community Nurse when individual children start nursery on their specific needs, for example Gastrostomy Button Feeding.
The practitioner working one to one with children with SEND has recently completed Level 3 in Supporting Individuals with Disabilities (September 2017).

The setting is all ground level and is wheelchair accessible throughout.
Adaptions are made for individual children, for example a quiet area with good acoustics for a hearing impaired child to support one to one sessions.
The outdoor areas offer a range of different environments to meet the needs of all children.

We have good relationships with local schools and other Early Years providers which promotes smooth transitions from home to Selby Cottage and Selby Cottage to school.
Enhanced transition meetings are arranged for individual children where parents and carers, nursery staff, school headteachers, teachers and SENCOs meet to put support in place for children when starting school.
