Elective home education

Most parents choose to send their child to school, but you do have the right to educate your child at home

The law says that children must receive a full-time education, from the age of five that is suitable to a child's age, ability, aptitude and any special educational need they may have. This does not have to take place at a school. If you are thinking about, or choose, home education, the local authority can offer advice and support.

Information, advice and guidance about elective home education can be found on Durham County Council’s website.

Advice and support

Durham County Council staff offer advice and support for home educating families or those considering home education. This can include advice before a child is removed from school (if your child is home educated they cannot stay on a school register or they will be marked as absent).

We can also discuss:

  • The arrangements for meeting your child’s special educational needs.
  • The Education, Health and Care assessment process and review arrangements.
  • Access to Career, Information, Advice and Guidance to discuss options for young people to move forward into work or further education.
  • Links with colleges for pre-16 courses for home-educated young people and information about elective home education networks, through the Local Offer.
