Local Offer

Local Offer description

I am the Mam of an adult son as well as having numerous years experience working as a childminder. Within that time, I have cared for children who have additional needs.

  • Lorna is the qualified and designated EYSenco
  • I have experience of supporting children and their families with needs relating to Autistic Spectrum.
  • I have supported children who have additional needs due to social and emotional development that had a direct impact on the ability to communicate using spoken word or have the understanding of body language.
  • I have worked with children who have a hearing and visual impairment and understand the impact these can have in relation to day-to-day tasks.
  • I have worked closely with children and families when the child with additional needs have attended a mainstream school. Working closely with the school and staff to ensure a smooth transition from the setting to school.
  • I have gained many years of experience supported by outside agencies to ensure the best outcomes for the child and their families.
  • I currently support a child with speech and language delay. I am working closely with the Speech and Language Team (SALT) and the school he is going to attend, ensuring that the child has had more visits so that transition is a little less daunting.
  • I have supported children and their parents when a child has had a food allergy or intolerance, to ensure that their child still had a full and well-balanced diet.
  • I care for children and families who speak English as a second language, gaining much experience of diversity in relation to different cultures and beliefs.

How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

When a child and family come to visit for the first time, I chat with them about the child and their needs.

If the family identify that the child has additional needs or needs support, I discuss where they feel my role would benefit both the family and child.

When the child is attending sessions and during observations and monitoring, if a gap is identified, I would record my observations and then talk to parents/carers about what I have observed and ask if they have noticed anything similar.

I will offer advice and give options that can be considered to support the child and family to address the gap in development. If after interventions are put in place, there is little or no improvement, I will again speak to parents/carers to see if they are happy for me to contact outside support agencies for advice and/or a formal assessment.

How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?

As a Childminder with many years experience, the needs of all children are considered in everything that I do. Activities are adapted to allow all children the opportunity to develop and reach their full potential.

The EYFS requirements clearly state that each child is given the opportunities and environment to reach their full potential. This is something that I hold dear and adapt and amend activities so that the setting is truly inclusive.

I will source advice and support from the Education and Additional Needs Team at the council, to ensure that I am contacting the correct and appropriate agencies to give maximum support for both the child and family/carers.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the early years setting?

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the early years setting?
  • Families with English as a second language
  • Speech and Language
  • ITS
  • Audiology
  • Health visitor team
  • Family support
  • Physiotherapists
  • Portage
  • Paedratirc professionals

What training have the staff supporting children with SEND had, or are having?

What training have the staff supporting children with SEND had, or are having?

Lorna has completed EYSenco level 3 qualification and is the lead SENCO

Having worked closely with outside agencies, I have gained substantial SEND knowledge. I have also completed relevant courses to ensure that the approach used to identify need is timely to ensure the best outcomes for the child and family.

All staff have completed SEN training.

How accessible is the early years setting environment? (indoors/outdoors)

How accessible is the early years setting environment? (indoors/outdoors)

The front of the property is wheelchair accessible and the doors within the property are wide enough to allow access to all downstairs areas.

There are two steps to the rear of the property to access the outdoor space, but should the need arise, adaptions to include a ramp would be implemented.

Within the playroom, toys and resources are at a low level for easy child accessibility.

There is a downstairs toilet that is wheelchair accessible, with its door opening outwards to maximise the floor space.

The outdoor area is on two levels - a paved patio area and then a lower grassed area. Again, a ramp would be obtained to allow access to this area.

How will the early years provision prepare and support my child(ren's) transition to their next educational establishment?

How will the early years provision prepare and support my child(ren's) transition to their next educational establishment?

Children regularly go to school as part of our daily routine and become familiar with the routine of some of the children attending school.

When it is time for the children to attend their next educational establishment, they are introduced to teaching staff and visit the classroom they are going to be in

I have forged excellent links with the local school and the teaching staff have also visited the children here, so that the children meet them in a familiar and emotionally safe environment.
