We offer ‘30 hours childcare for working parents’. 

We are an Ofsted registered Outstanding Nursery based in Eastlea Community Centre in Seaham, providing sessions for children aged 2-5 years. Our nursery is run by staff who hold a level 3 or above childcare qualifications, are fully DBS checked, and have first aid training, safeguarding training and awareness. 

Sessions promote self-confidence, self-esteem and speech and language development. Children are encouraged through activities to use all of their senses to explore their environment, whilst developing their social skills and building relationships with others. 

Tots ‘R’ Us Nursery has 'Millie’s Mark' Accreditation, a Quality Mark for nurseries where 100% of employees working directly with children are trained in paediatric first aid. This has been awarded by National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) in association with the Department for Education and Millie’s Trust.

How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

The identification of SEND is built into our overall approach to monitoring the progress and development of all children, through continually assessing, planning, implementing and reviewing, as described in the SEND Code of Practice.

Ongoing observational assessments are made of all children and linked to the Early Years Outcomes and Development Matters ages and stages of development.

We assess all children when they join us so that we can build upon their prior learning. We use this information to provide starting points for the development of an appropriate curriculum for each individual child.

If our assessments show that a child may have a special educational need, we will use a range of strategies making full use of all available resources.

In liaison with the SENCO, the child’s key person will offer interventions that are ‘different from’ or ‘additional to’ those provided as part of our usual working practices, taking into account the child's interests.

We use the 'graduated approach system' for identifying, assessing and responding to children with special educational needs. The process for doing this is to Assess, Plan, Do and Review.

Having worked with children with SEND we have been able to build up good working partnerships with the following professionals:

  • Health Visitors
  • Council Equality and Inclusion Education Development Advisers
  • Speech and Language Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physiotherapist
  • One Point Children’s Centre Family Support Outreach Workers
  • Education Psychologists
  • Social Workers

We can contact many other professionals regarding a child’s specific individual needs.

Staff have accessed a wide range of training to support our children with SEND. Training includes speech and language, behaviour, Autism, using visual prompts such as Now and Next and Makaton.

Our Nursery room and outdoor area is within a local community centre and accessible all on one level. Should there be any limitations of the building affecting a child then we will attempt to make all reasonable changes and adjustments. Our resources are all accessible to the children who have free choice.

We have a Transition Policy in place and hold review meetings to plan transition for a child into nursery/school. As well as parents and nursery staff, these meetings could include foundation stage school teachers, school SENCO, staff from the receiving setting and relevant professionals. We share all documentation such as support plans, Early Years assessments and observations.

We invite receiving nursery/schools to visit us to familiarise themselves with and observe the child and to share information in partnership with parents.

We have booklets containing pictures and information of the receiving nursery/school, which we share with the children and families. We operate an open door policy and our staff welcomes families to visit our Nursery. We will aim to work together to include any child with special educational needs and disabilities.
