We are the oldest UK Tri-Service charity and have been supporting the Armed Forces and their families continuously since 1885. Our support covers both the Regular and Reserve Forces in the British Armed Forces, Veterans, Merchant Navy (if deployed operationally) and their families, including anyone who has completed National Service. They are all entitled to lifelong support from SSAFA, no matter how long they have served.

Our experience has helped us understand the unique demands of service life. We are continually updating what we do to ensure we meet the changing needs of servicemen and women, veterans and their families as they transition through Service and into civilian life.  We put Armed Forces families at the heart of everything we do.

We help over 90,000 individuals every year. Our vital work is made possible by a network of over 4,000 trained volunteers working with local health and welfare services and other service charities, to ensure that those who turn to us for help from the military community get the support they need.

The Durham Branch of SSAFA covers the whole of the Co Durham area in 6 Divisions, that includes Hartlepool and Darlington.
