We are an organisation that promotes the human rights of children and young people. One of the things that gets in the way of this is that, in general children aren’t taken as seriously as adults - many people still believe that ‘children should be seen and not heard’.

We try to change this, by creating spaces for children and young people to come together and come up with good ideas, and by working with adults who want to listen and do something about it. This is one of the ways to make the point that children, young people and adults all have the right to have their voices heard – this is a human right.

Investing in Children was created in 1995 by a partnership between Durham County Council and the NHS. We are still based in Durham, but since 2004, we have worked with partners across the country. In May 2013 we became a Community Interest Company. For over 20 years, we have been working alongside children and young people, and adults who provide services to them, to create a range of effective ways in which they can exercise their right to have a say, often resulting in improvements in the services themselves.

One of the groups which is run by Investing in Children is the eXtreme Group. The eXtreme Group is a group of children and young people from across County Durham who all have a Special Educational Need and or a Disability (SEND). The group come together once a month to share their views and identify how services can make positive changes based on the experiences of children and young people with SEND. For more information on how to get involved in the eXtreme Group please contact Investing in Children.
