Ribbon Academy

Ribbon Academy - is a special place, unique in County Durham and indeed the whole of the country. Identified as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2010, this visually stunning building, opened in 2006, hosts the school, Ribbon Daycare, Ribbon Family Centre and One Point.

Boys and girls come to the Ribbon expecting to achieve a great deal in the classroom, but they leave the school realising that the ethos and the whole of school life have been equally beneficial.

Within an ethos of high expectation, the academy children constantly surprise themselves with how much they can do and achieve. Breadth of opportunity; depth of achievement; a chance to plan, play and be appreciated; unstinting support and care; a sense of fun; space to think and a buzz of excitement: this is what characterises an education in the Ribbon.

Please look through their website, but don’t convince yourself that it’s the real thing. After this virtual experience, come in and see the school in action at every invitation, or just ask the children. The academy believe that you too will feel that empowering ethos, that can-do culture, that special feeling of life which is the Ribbon.

SEND at the Ribbon School

How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

A learning difficulty, associated with a Special Educational Need is identified:

  • If the child has significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age.
  • If they have a disability that prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for children of the same age.
  • If you are concerned about your child then please speak to a member of teaching staff regarding this.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

The Ribbon Academy has a relentless focus upon sustained progress and achievement and are committed to the equal inclusion of all pupils in all areas of school life. They recognise the diverse and individual needs of all their pupils and take into account the additional support required by those children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Ribbon Academy recognise that all pupils are entitled to a quality of provision which will enable them to achieve their full potential. They believe in positive intervention; removing barriers to learning; raising expectations and levels of achievement and working in partnership with other agencies in order to provide a positive educational experience for all SEND pupils at the earliest and most consistent point available.

Ribbon Academy believe that the time spent with them should prepare young people for future life and equip them as independent, resilient members of the community, and they therefore ensure that the years spent with them are about so much more than an education based upon exams; they are about an experience which will remain with them; and prepare them for the rest of their lives.
