The contribution of parents/carers and the wider community to our children’s education and progress is vital and we are actively seeking to strengthen our partnership.  At Shotton Primary School we are committed to the equal inclusion of all pupils in all areas of Early Years and Primary School life, irrespective of their needs. We recognise the diverse and individual needs of all of our pupils and take into account the differing additional support required by those children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).   We recognise that those needs may change and evolve over the time at which your child is with us at Shotton Primary School. The SENCO is also the Designated Teacher for Looked after Children to ensure all teachers in school understand the implications for those children who are looked after and have SEND.

How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We invest heavily in ensuring that the needs of all of our children are met in the most effective way. Through enhanced provision we can draw upon specialist services (such as Speech and Language and Educational Psychologist Services) so that children's needs can be quickly identified and support where possible can be provided to meet each child's developing needs.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Led by Miss Donoghue our Foundation Stage Leader our highly skilled staff seek to provide a nurturing, supportive and challenging learning environment.

We appreciate that for some children transition into the routines and structures of school and nursery life can be more difficult. By working in partnership with yourselves as parents and carers an individual induction and transition programme can be developed tailored to the invidual needs of your child.

Children should be at the heart of everything that we do.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

In September 2014 a new national curriculum was introduced for all state maintained primary schools. This obviously means that as a school we have had to look at our curriculum to ensure that we make some required changes whilst at the same time ensuring that we focus upon the learning needs of our children.

It is vital that our children are enthusiastic and motivated learners who are able to transfer basic and important skills (such as reading, writing, measuring and mathematical problem solving and reasoning) to different situations and contexts.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

All children are able to access counselling from Helen our school counsellor through a self referral system. They may be times when individual children are referred by staff and professionals to help them cope with challenges that they face at a variety of levels.

However above all it is vital that our nurturing and supportive ethos runs throughout everything that we do. We firmly believe that all of our children should be provided with consistency and stability within school, where there is always someone to listen. The role of all adults working with our children is intrinsic to ensuring that all of our children have resiliance and inner strength, whereby they can develop as self confident and proud individuals with high aspirations.

What specialist services and expertise is available at or accessed by the staff?

The professional development of all of our staff is a large part of what we do ensuring that they have the necessary skills, expertise and knowledge.

In addition to this we have:

  • a non-class based full time SENCO
  • school based counselling services
  • a full time behaviour and attendance officer
  • a part time parent support advisor

Specialist services that we are able to access include:

  • CAHMS
  • Speech and Language
  • Educational Psychologist
  • Occupational Therapy

 

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

All staff working with and supporting children have accessed high quality training including:

  • Delivering interventions such as Numbers Count and LEXIA
  • Developing a sensory classrooom
  • Developing social stories
  • Meeting medical needs of children with SEND

Our SENCO has a wealth of experience, knowledge, training and qualifications focussed directly upon meeting the diverse and wide range of children's needs.

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

As a school we recognise the importance and value of children learning outside the classroom for example Forest Schools and educational visits.

We ask for voluntary contributions to enable us to offer a wide range of educational visits and visitors. Our charging and remissions policy (available through our school website) sets out our approach. As a school we do subsidise all educational visits and visitors wherever possible.

Recently we have been visited by STOMP, Creatures from the Rainforest, Superheroes, Pirates and the Lions of Zululand and our children have visited places such as  Centre for Life, Woodhorn Mining Museum, Hartlepool Historic Quay and Beamish Museum.

Our building is fully accessible.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We have close links with local secondary schools such as Wellfield and The Academy at Shotton Hall. Staff work closely to ensure that our children are ready for the next stage of their education. Transition arrangements can be tailored to the indivdual needs of our children.

What is available to help my child with their education?

Funding is used to:

  • Employ additional staff
  • Employ and train a SENCO to liase with parents, other professionals and outside agencies to meet the needs of our pupils.
  • Facillitate a non-class based role for our SENCO and Inclusion Managerto support wider professional development in relation to SEN.
  • Meeting training needs and associated costs.
  • Facilitate regular opportunities for liason (staff, pupils, parents and agencies)
  • Buy in specialist services and support
  • Provide specific learning and teaching resources

 

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Decisions are based upon need through a thorough consultation process drawing upon relevant advice and support.

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

We recognise that parents and carers have an invaluable part to play in terms of the life of the school and our community.

We have regular events such as Summer Fayre, harvest lunch, mothers day and fathers day lunches and our Easter services and annula Carol Service where our parents join us in school and at our local church St. Saviours.

We are constantly looking at ways in which we can involve you as parents in supporting your child's learning such as play and stay sessions, extended parent consultation days and parent staff msocial events such as visiting magic shows.

A vital role which some parents play within the leadership and strategic direction of the school of the school is by being part of our Governing Body.
