This page provides information about mainstream schools' provision for children with special education needs.

The majority of children with special educational needs will have their needs met in their local mainstream school.

Some children will need to attend some specialist provision to have their needs met. In County Durham, we have a range of provision for children with special educational needs. The schools listed below have specialist provision for those children and young people with the most complex needs.

All mainstream schools in Durham are funded to make provision and meeting the special educational needs of children who need SEN Support.

In addition to this funding, some mainstream schools have, what we have called, Enhanced Mainstream Provision to meet the needs of some children and young people.  An Education, Health and Care Assessment is not required to access this provision although we would need evidence that the child's needs are significant before offering a place.

Enhanced mainstream provision

We have established enhanced mainstream provision at the following schools:

Hearing impairment

Visual impairment

Speech and language difficulties

Physical difficulties

Autism spectrum disorders

Behavioural difficulties

For children and young people with the most complex needs, a place at a special school might be considered. The special schools in County Durham are listed below:

If you are moving into County Durham and your child has an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan, or is undergoing an EHC assessment, you should contact the SEND, Looked After and Vulnerable Groups Casework Team for advice.

Details of the provision at each school should be available on their school's Local Offer.
