Thornhill Primary School

Thornhill Primary School Logo

Thornhill is a small, village Primary School just outside Egremont. We are a passionate and friendly school and we are proud of the achievements of all of our pupils and staff when working together. We are firmly of the view that by working together we can achieve more for everyone. We go the extra mile to offer the very best we can – not only to pupils but to the whole community too. This means that we offer a range of extra-curricular, community and public events, classes and projects. As a result, we are delighted that we have a fantastic relationship with the village and a number of community groups and organisations.

We want to give our pupils the best education they can get, to set them on the right tracks for the rest of their lives, and our track record speaks for itself. We have been rated good by Ofsted, and our results show that we always help our pupils achieve all that they can, and provide excellent added value. We will work together to create a safe, caring, stimulating and motivating environment where every child is encouraged and supported to succeed and reach their full potential, both academically, creatively and personally, enabling them to become successful citizens of the future.

From September 2014, Schools have a duty to publish on their website what they offer to families of children with SEN. We are a small, inclusive school with a wide-range of experience in supporting pupils with SEN and their families.

What we offer:

  • Wheelchair accessible building, disabled toilets, changing area and shower.

  • Small classes with a high pupil: staff ratio.

  • Experienced staff, including an HLTA responsible for the pastoral well-being of vulnerable pupils.

  • Weekly nurture groups.

  • Regular academic monitoring, termly reports to parents.

  • Struggling pupils/SEN pupils tracking using a personalised education programme (IEP).

  • Staff available to speak with parents/carers daily. Regular termly meetings for parents/carers of a pupil on an IEP.

  • Parent/Pupil views sought and acted upon to improve the quality of service provided. (surveys, meetings, school council)

  • Experienced Governing Body who oversee Pupil Welfare.

  • Have our own nursery school age range 2-11.

Strong links with Secondary feeder schools. Transition arrangements in place.

  • In-school transition is smooth as there are only two classes in the school. Pupils and staff know each other very well.

  • Strong links with specialist teachers and other professionals including Educational Psychology, Health Visitors, Howgill Centre, Young Carers, Pupil Referral Unit

  • SENCO role undertaken by Head Teacher of the school.

  • Large building and specialist areas for small group and one to one work.

  • Regular training to up-skill staff in order to support various needs. This includes ‘Dyslexia awareness’ and supporting children with Autistic Spectrum Conditions.

Spending on SEN:

  • The majority of our budget is used on personnel. We aim to keep specialist maths and English teachers in KS2 and to maintain our experienced teaching assistants.

  • Teaching Assistants and Teachers are used to do small groups, one to one and paired support sessions through-out the week. These include nurture groups, toe by toe support and a ‘learn to learn’ programme.

  • We spend a portion of our budget on resources to support SEN pupils. Recent purchases have included books for struggling readers which appeal to boys, toe by toe programme and an electronic tablet for SEN use.

  • We spend some of our budget on training for staff and covering the supply costs. Where possible staff attend after-school training or do extra research online.
