Carlisle MENCAP is a charity and a membership organisation for people with learning disabilities and their families. 

Services we provide:

  • Advice for Parents, Carers and Service Users Across North Cumbria.
  • Advice on Community Care Assessments, reviews, housing, the level type of  type service that you/your relative is or isn't receiving; benefit entitlements, changes to benefits.  Specific advice about education, statementing or the support your child should receive.
  • Advice for Families of Young People Aged 18 or Under on the Autistic Spectrum.

The Cumbria Autism Family Support Project - operates in Carlisle, Eden, Barrow in Furness, Copeland and Allerdale.  Provides parental advice on any aspect of autism including parents support workshops and training - also SOKA (siblings of kids with autism) programmes including occasional holidays.

Grace Little Centre - A new fully accessible facility for children with all disabilities at Kingstown, Carlisle.  Includes sensory room , soft play, IT suite accessible play.  Four bedding residential wing - with overhead track, high - low baths, beds, sinks, etc.  Can be hired by individuals or groups .

Short Breaks for Children with Disabilities Funded by Cumbria County Council for young People aged 8 to 19:

  • Includes sports time club - Monday evenings at The Sands Centre in Carlisle.
  • Theatre Arts - Thursday evenings YMCA, Carlisle - term time.
  • Stardust - community activity clubs - Saturdays - term time.
  • Monthly Sunday activity in the community.
  • Monthly Sunday soft play / sensory day at the Grace Little Centre.
  • Weekend residential breaks at the Grace Little Centre - these are limited to a few weekends a year at the moment.

Short Breaks funded by the NHS:

  • Activators - Weekly Saturday club 10 to 3.  Sports, arts, craft, outing and fund and more fun.  Rotates between the Grace Little Centre and Newtown Road School.
  • Activators Play Scheme - Two week play scheme in the summer holidays and 3 days in every other school holiday.  Trips, sport, culture, arts, hobbies and lots more fun.

For Young People Aged 8 to 19:

  • Got Getters - Bi-monthly activity club in Wigton at Tomlinson Junior School.
  • Project supported by West House and Cumbria Youth Alliance.

Under 8's home support service funded by Cumbria County Council:

  • 2 Hours a week of home support for families - carers can sit in our take young people out to do activities - Carlisle district.

One to One Community Support for People Aged 8 Upwards:

  • Can be support in the home or out and about.  Carlisle and Allerdale.

Family Night at the Grace Little Centre:

  • 2 Hours afer school session on a Wednesday.  soft play, sensory, computers, accessible outdoor equipment.  Cost £5 - young people need to be supported by a parent/carer - one sibling goes free.

Other Service for Young Adults:

  • Include community support, supported living, residential respite, holidays, film making, and leisure services.  Carlisle and Allerdale.
