At Furness College we want to make sure you are confident about the next choice your son or daughter will make. We hope this information will help you feel sure that Furness College is the right choice. Our breadth of provision ensures that our students have the flexibility to choose options that interest and motivate them, as well as providing progression into university education or employment.

Furness College offers an extensive range of professional and technical qualifications, from entry qualifications to degree level. Alternatively, we offer a variety of traineeships. These are pre-apprenticeship programmes, lasting from six weeks up to six months, which combine education, training, work experience and maths and English.

A ‘Study Programme’ is the title that covers all parts of a full-time course. The main part of this programme is the professional and technical qualification which takes up most of the timetable. However, there are other compulsory parts to the programme. All students who do not already have a GCSE at grade C or above in English Language or maths will be expected to study these subjects. The hours dedicated to them will depend on whether both have to be studied and at which level they are studied. Other elements include tutorial time where students meet to discuss their targets and progress or any problems with their personal tutor. There is also time in the year when every student will have some experience of work. Students have to attend all areas of their study programme to continue to attend college.

As part of any professional and technical course you develop your skills in information and communication technology, English and maths. These are skills that employers value and they form a separate qualification in their own right.
