Plumpton School is a non-denominational primary school catering for children from 3 to 11 years of age. The original Victorian building was remodelled and extended in 1976, with further extensions in 1998 and 2001. The accommodation includes two junior classrooms, well-planned infant units with their own toilets, library area, hall and self-contained kitchen.

There is adequate playground space and an adjoining school field with a fenced off vegetable garden. The school is well equipped and can provide all the facilities of a modern primary school. The present school roll is 68 children. Parents are welcome in school. If you wish to speak to a member of staff, it is best to time your visit for before or after school.

We join with several other local schools for a variety of activities throughout the year. These include sporting events, outdoor activities and theatre group visits amongst others. As the children reach year 6, and are getting ready for secondary school, activities with year 6 children from other schools ensures that they know lots of people when they arrive at their new school.

Local Offer Description

We seek to identify and assess the special needs of individual pupils using a variety of assessment techniques. Pupils with SEN are placed on our SEN register and teachers differentiate for their needs in each lesson through Individual Educational Plans or in some cases Statements of SEN. These are regularly reviewed by the Inclusion Officer and Head Teacher, Mrs S. Penny and the Class Teacher. Where appropriate the school will access external resources and outside agencies in meeting children’s special needs.

Every child is unique and at Plumpton School children are identified as having SEND in a variety of ways:

  • Liason with previous schools/settings
  • Health diagnosis through GP, Paediatrician, Health Visitor

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

The school is committed to providing equal opportunities for all, regardless of race, faith, gender or capability in all aspects of school. Plumpton School provides a caring environment where self and mutual respect is promoted.

SEND children are supported by staff in the following ways:

  • Individual School Support Plans and Learning Journeys are planned through collaboration with the child's teacher, SENDCO and parents
  • Lessons are differentiated for all children and formative assessment identifies the neXt steps in children's learning
  • Teachers plan lessons to best meet the needs of individual children and the impact of any additional intervention is closely monitored to make sure there is a positive outcome
  • Governors receive updates about SEND issues and there is a designated SEND governor who liaises with the SENDCO
How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

Teachers carefully plan lessons that ensure that children with SEND are able to accessthe curriculum as fully as possible

  • Differentiation to tailor the individual's needs to the learning outcome
  • Small group work led by the class teacher or teaching assisstant
  • One to one work when necessary
  • Specific intervention programmes led by qualified staff run over a set period of time
How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

In order to best meet the needs of all children we recognise that there needs to be a good working relationship between teachers and parents.

  • We encourage parents to discuss any issues with the class teacher as soon as they arise
  • We hold parent/teacher consultations throughout the year to discuss individual children's progress
  • Parents receive an annual written report at the end of each academic year. This report identifies 'effort and attitude' as well as academic achievement in line with age-related expectations
  • If your child has very specific needs then the targets that we would like them to achieve are written down in a Learning Support Plan
  • All children with specific medical conditions have an Education Health Care Plan detailing any necessary provision regarding medication
What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?
  • Staff offer a range of pastoral and medical support to ensure a safe environment where good behaviour and care for others is fundamental
  • Respect, tolerance and understanding make up part of our Values Curriculum at Plumpton School and they underpin everything that the staff and children do. Children develop an understanding of fairness and learn that their voice is valued
  • The level of external agency support varies according to need, but we do draw on professional advice whenever necessary

Our SENDCO is a fully qualified teacher with experience in managing Special Educational Needs & Disabilities in line with the new SEND Code of Practice

External Agencies that we work alongside include:

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

Staff within school are trained in:

  • Reading Intervention
  • Maths Recovery
  • Specialist programmes for maths and literacy support
  • Kidsafe
  • School staff are trained and experienced in the monitoring of Diabetes
  • Medicines are administered by staff through application via a medical information form

If your child comes into care with a different medical condition, appropriate care and training is allocated to staff supervising the care of your child

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment
  • Plumpton School does have wheelchair access
  • Most of the outdoor area is flat with slopes accessing the classroom entrances
  • There is a disabled toilet
How will the seting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life
  • There is an extensive transition programme available to all children preparing to join the Early Years Unit during the term before they start school
  • When your child is ready to move to secondary school there is an extensive range of transition events programmed across the final two years of primary school. This involves partnerships with other local primaries to enable children to meet as many peers as possible
  • There is close communication between staff at Plumpton School and the SENDCO's at the secondary schools providing detailed information about each child, pastoral and academic
  • Children who might benefit from closer preparation have the opportunity to visit the secondary schools with staff from Plumpton School

  • Resources are carefully matched to maximise impact
