Applying for Direct Payments

What is a direct payment?

Direct payments are made to allow people to organise and buy their own social care services with the flexibility to use them as and when required.

They can be used in a variety of ways to pay for things like personal care, respite, day services and community activities. They can also be paid as part of a personal budget if you decide to have one.

Direct payments enable you to have more choice and control over the support you or your child receive. They are not seen as income and have no effect on tax or benefits.

An assessment will be carried out by social workers from to see if you are eligible to receive direct payments as part of a care package to help meet your assessed needs.

Who is eligible?

  • A person aged between 0 and 25 that has been assessed as needing and being eligible for services
  • The parent of a disabled child who has been assessed as needing and being eligible for services
  • A carer with an agreed assessment of need who is eligible for direct carer support

You can always choose whether to have direct payments or to receive services arranged by the council. You cannot be made to accept direct payments if you don't want them. If you use direct payments and later decide not to, you can revert back to the Local Authority providing the services.

Contact details

If you or someone you care for gets helps from Social Services, you can apply for direct payments.  These let you choose and buy the services you need yourself.  Direct Payments can be used flexibly and offer you greater choice of the support you receive.
