Autism Hub and Library

***National Autistic Society CWaC Branch Opens***

**Autism Hub and Library @ Rosebank School, Barnton.**

A much-needed library and resource centre for parents and professionals involved with children and adults on the autistic spectrum has opened.  The Autism Library at Rosebank School will be housed at The Bungalow within the school’s grounds, show-casing a collection of books, DVDs, CD’s, visual aids, sensory toys and other useful tools to support anyone caring for someone with autism, Asperger’s or other learning or sensory difficulty.

For several years, the Autism Team and the National Autistic Society (CWaC Branch) has amassed a varied collection of books.  The Autism Service has kindly donated the library for use by the Branch. This collection will grow from grants in place to purchase more books and resources over the coming months. They cover subjects from social skills to emotional understanding, employment and support services to children’s mental health, language development and parental/sibling support. A collection of magazines, journals, DVDs and CD’s are also available to browse on site or take home.

The library offers the unique facility to borrow or try out on site. This includes sensory toys, weighted clothing, visual aids, ear defenders and timing tools, plus many more in the future. This will prove invaluable for families with children or adults on the spectrum or with related conditions, to help them find items that will provide support in everyday life without having to spend a large amount from the outset.

Opening the doors is just the beginning, as future plans for the library are ambitious. Library volunteer Karen McGuiness, who is currently studying for a degree in Autism (Children) at Birmingham University, says “We want the resource to evolve into a centre for autism support and learning in Cheshire. We want to increase understanding of how people with autism view the world differently, and would like to offer seminars to help support parents and professionals alike.”

The Library will be staffed by volunteers and will open every week on a Wednesday 10-6pm, and is available by appointment on other days of the working week. Membership of the library is available to parents and professionals via an annual fee, which can be paid in full or spread out in monthly payments. The cost for a parent membership is £10 a year or £25 per annum for professionals. All parent members will receive a resource pack on joining containing information, informal support and guidance.
