Alternative Provision

Alternative Provision for Cheshire West and Chester Council is provided by The Bridge Short Stay School which is a Pupil Referral Unit. The Bridge is a maintained school but is not a mainstream school. Cheshire West and Chester Council commissions The Bridge to provide education for:

  • Permanently excluded pupils
  • Pupils with a medical condition who are unable to attend their home school
  • A smaller number of ‘other’ pupils who come under the statutory responsibility of the Local Authority

There are also a number of independent providers of Alternative Provision in Cheshire West and Chester. The Alternative Provision Directory includes information about these providers.  Mainstream schools and the Pupil Referral Unit can commission education from these providers as part of a pupil’s individual education plan. In general, most pupils will access a programme of alternative provision on a part-time basis whilst receiving the majority of their education in their home school. Schools are responsible for quality assuring the provision, monitoring pupil attendance and progress and ensuring the pupil has full entitlement to education.
