Part of HCA, the 1A Arts Centre is a community arts provider delivering activities for children and young people, adults, and over 60s in and around Holborn. All of our creative activities are delivered using a participatory approach, designed to welcome and encourage the whole community to give arts a go. It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced artist or first-time paintbrush holder!
Arts Classes for Children and Young People
Our creative groups for children and young people inspire curiosity, develop skills and help children to make friends through creative play.
We have also started two new art and sport after school group collaborations, one with social housing provider One Housing and the Calthorpe Project, and the other on the Tybalds Estate.
We also run popular weekly after school pottery classes for children and young people. A space like our pottery studio – with professional teaching, access to specialist tools and equipment and our own kiln, facilitates people’s creativity and learning.
Our Digital Arts Project offers children and young people opportunities to experiment with new technologies and digital art forms from animation, glitch art and illustration to film-making and sound installations. We hold a weekly Digital Arts Club during term-time, run inspiring Trips Out, and deliver digital media activities in community settings, as well as partnering with local cultural institutions for an annual Summer Film Project such as Somerset House, Sir John Soane’s Museum, Francis Crick Institute and Foundling Museum to improve young people’s digital arts skills and increase their confidence and aspiration.
Arts Classes for Adults
Our recently developed adults classes aim to support people to continue to build on their creative practice, whilst using the arts as a tool to bring people together.
Our established adult pottery workshops provide a supportive creative space for people to develop skills in ceramics supported by an experienced potter.
We have been running popular Masterclass sessions since September 2018, encouraging local people to try new skills in relaxed one off evening sessions.
We have also started a weekly art group specifically for Carers as well as a Make and Mend group.
Holiday Projects and Community Events
In addition to our regular arts programme, we can often be found running events in our local community. We love to run creative holiday projects, keep an eye out for our upcoming programmes.
